Download Shraddha Kannada by Afzal Premi. Afzal Premi is a Bangladeshi writer and journalist. He was born in Sylhet, the youngest of eight children of a prominent lawyer and politician, Khurshed Alam Chowdhury and Begum Mumtaz Chowdhury. Chowdhurys family were one of the leading Muslim landlords of East Bengal. He earned his B.A. and M.A degrees in economics from the University of Dhaka, and while still a student, he was elected editor of the university magazine "Shishu". When democracy was restored in Bangladesh in 1990 after years of military rule and repression, Afzal Premi joined the Jatiya Press as Editor-in-chief and launched new English language publications such as The Independent, Weekly Blitz and World Watch.. He also founded the monthly magazine "Focus" to highlight social concerns. In 1993 he created a sensation by publishing a series of investigative articles on the highhanded behavior of some members of Bangladesh Military which led to their court martial.. He then launched his own weekly newspaper "The Observer" by publishing articles, breaking news and reports on the environment, health care, social issues. He also published two bi-monthly magazines "Focus Quarterly" and "Focus Weekend". His book "Itna Padegi Naam" (Some Names) was translated into English by Canadian writer Hassan Faruq. Amongst other activities Afzal was chairman of Bangladesh Film Censor Board; executive director of the Bangladeshi NGO Helping Hand; president of the International Press Institute (IPI); member of the executive board of World Press Freedom Committee (WPFC). He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1997. Afzal Premi has written many books on Bangladeshi society and Bengali culture. He writes popular economic, political, social and cultural books. His latest book is "Banglapedia", which is a guide to Bangla culture, history, geography and literature. Afzal Premi lives in Canada since 1993, where he is the editor of Canadian Bangla News. He was appointed as president of Bangladesh-Canada Business Council by the Government of Canada for two years.
